The Reign of the Sun King.

Louis XIV of France was a truly great monarch. Ruling from the 14th of May 1643 to the 1st of September 1715, his official title was "Louis XIV, by the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre".

He was very arrogant and called himself the Sun King. He commissioned 300 formal portraits of himself and had war artists follow him on campaign to record his triumphas on the spot.

He is well known for bringing the aristocracy under his control and reducing the Church's influence in France, creating an efficient absolute monarchy and a firm centralized government under his control.

He constructed the famous Chateau de Versailles, the largest and most elaborate palace complex in Europe. He made all of the aristocracy live there with him, meaning he would effectively keep them under his direct control.
